174. Changing Devices & File Transfers

File transfers using cloud storage

Cloud storage allows you to upload and save artwork to an online file storage area and download saved artwork to your device. By storing artwork in cloud storage, you can transfer them to other devices by simply logging into ibisPaint and downloading them from cloud storage.
For detailed instructions on how to use cloud storage, please see, “Synchronizing the artworks on your device with Cloud Storage”.

Settings such as color palettes and brushes will not sync. For methods on how to backup and restore settings, please see the next section, “File transfers using third-party cloud storage (Dropbox, etc.)”

File transfers using third-party cloud storage (Dropbox, etc.)

If transferring artwork through cloud storage proves difficult, or if you wish to transfer artwork through other means, it is also possible to use third-party cloud storage services.
Since data is sent via the internet, transferring large numbers of illustration files can consume significant bandwidth. Therefore, we recommend using a Wi-Fi connection during such transfers.

Next, we will explain how to transfer files using Dropbox.

Saving illustration files (at source)

First, download Dropbox from an app store like the App Store or Google Play Store. Next, go to https://www.dropbox.com/, create a Dropbox account, and log in to the Dropbox app.

Launch ibisPaint and select ①[ the artwork file ] you wish to back up from My Gallery.

Tap ②[ the Share button ] then select ③[ ibisPaint Artwork (IPV) ] from the file format list.

When a screen that lists methods for sharing appears, select ④[ Dropbox ]. If Dropbox does not appear on the list, please find it in ⑤[ More ].

Select your destination folder and tap ⑥[ Upload ]. To backup multiple artwork files, repeat steps ① to ⑥ as needed.

Restoring illustration files (at destination)

On your destination device, install the Dropbox app and log in.

From your list of files saved to the cloud, select ①[ the (IPV) illustration file ] you wish to restore.

A prompt appears saying “Can’t be previewed” though this is not a problem. Tap ②[ … ].

Select ③[ Save to device ].

Select ④[ your file transfer destination app ]. If ibisPaint does not appear on the list, please find and select it in ⑤[ More ].

When you launch ibisPaint, your restored artwork files will appear in My Gallery. This completes the transfer process. To restore multiple artwork files, repeat the save process from Dropbox to ibisPaint as needed.

Artwork files saved to Dropbox and be shared easily as URLs by tapping “Share” then “Copy link.” Copied links can then be shared on social media, etc. to enable things such as creating collaborative artworks with friends.

Backing up and restoring settings

IbisPaint allows you to save personalized settings for features such as brushes and color palettes in a settings backup file (ipcfg). If you store this file on an external cloud service, you can easily recreate your preferred work environment whenever you upgrade or change devices.

Next, we will explain how to back up and restore your settings using Dropbox. The process is like transferring artwork files.

On the Home screen, tap ①[ the Settings button ].

Select ②[ Backup Settings ] in the “Other” section.

Select ③[ Dropbox ]. If Dropbox does not appear on the list, please find it in ④[ More ].

Select your destination folder and tap ⑤[ Upload ]. This saves your “Settings backup file (ipcfg)” to Dropbox. Next, we will explain how to import backup files to ibisPaint and restore your settings.

Open Dropbox then tap the ⑥[ … ] to the right of your saved backup file.

Select ⑦[ Save to device ].

Select ⑧[ your file transfer destination app ]. If ibisPaint does not appear on the list, please find and select it in ⑨[ More ].

IbisPaint will launch automatically. Switch to ON the settings you wish to import then tap the ⑩[ Done ] button.

When the confirmation screen appears, tap ⑪[ OK ] to complete the restoration.

Other file transfer methods

If both source and destination devices use the same operating system, transferring illustration files may be even easier than using an external cloud service.

File transfers between iPhone, iPad, and Mac

This method can be used when both source and destination devices are iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

1.File transfers using AirDrop

AirDrop can be a very convenient way to transfer files between iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Although a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection is required, illustration files can be transferred easily.

Launch ibisPaint and select ①[ the artwork ] you wish to back up from My Gallery.

Tap ②[ the Share button ] and select ③[ ibisPaint Artwork (IPV) ] from the file format list.

When the screen showing sharing options appears, select ④[ AirDrop ]. Next, select your destination device, and the artwork file will be sent. This completes the transfer. To send multiple artwork files, repeat the same steps as needed.

2.File transfers using Mac

If you have a Mac, you can also transfer data by saving illustration files to your Mac.

First, link your device to your Mac. You can link your devices either with a USB cable or through Wi-Fi. If it is your first time linking your devices, a prompt will appear asking, “Do you trust this computer?” If this message appears, tap “Trust” on both your device and Mac.

Once connected, launch the Finder app on your Mac, and from the sidebar, select ①[ your connected device (iPhone or iPad) ]. Next, select the ②[ Files ] tab and, when a list of apps appears, select ③[ ibisPaint ].

Select ④[ the artwork file (IPV) you wish to back up ] then drag it to any location such as your desktop or document folder, and the artwork file will be saved there.

Additionally, if you are using the Mac version of ibisPaint, you can add artwork files to My Gallery by simply launching ibisPaint on your Mac then ⑤[ dragging the artwork file (IPV) you wish to back up ] directly into My Gallery.

With this, the file transfer to your Mac is complete.

File transfers between Android devices

This file transfer method can be used when both source and destination devices use Android.

1.File transfers using Quick Share

Quick Share is a convenient way to transfer files between Android devices. Although a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection is required, it allows for the easy transfer of artwork files.

Launch ibisPaint and select ①[ the artwork ] you wish to back up from My Gallery.

Tap ②[ the Share button ] and select ③[ ibisPaint Artwork (IPV) ] from the file format list.

When the list of sharing options appears, select ④[ Quick Share ]. Next, select your destination device, and the artwork file will be sent, thereby completing the transfer. To send multiple artwork files, repeat the same steps as needed.

2.File transfers using USB cable

Connecting via USB cable allows you to send data not only to other Android devices but to PCs as well. Some steps may vary depending on the operating system or version on your device and PC.

2-1.When sending to PC

Connect your device to your PC using a USB cable.

On your device, open the notification panel and tap ①[ Tap for more options ] on the “Device is charging” notification.

When the screen for selecting the purpose of the USB connection appears, change your selection from “Charging only” to ②[ File Transfer/Android Auto ].

On the PC side, select ③[ Open device to view files ].

Select ④[ the artwork file (IPV) you wish to back up ] and drag it to where you want it saved such as the desktop. This completes the file transfer to your PC.

2-2.When sending to Android devices

Connect your Android devices together using a USB cable.

On the source device, open the notification panel and tap ①[ Tap for more options ] on the “Device is charging” notification.

When the USB settings screen appears, select ②[ This device ] and change the USB connection purpose to ③[ File Transfer/Android Auto ].

Next, take the destination device and open the notification panel. Go to the “Connected to ●●● (smartphone model)” notification and tap ④[ Display files ].

When the screen for selecting the app used to send and receive files appears, select ⑤[ MTP Host ].

Select ⑥[ your preferred file transfer app ]. In this example, we have selected “Files by Google,” which comes pre-installed on Android devices.

When the list of files stored on the source device appears, select ⑦[ the artwork file (IPV) you wish to back up ] by long pressing it.

Tap ⑧[ … ] to open the dropdown menu then tap ⑨[ Copy ]. This completes the transfer to your Android device.
